You might be wondering why in the world I wanted to start a blog about coffee. There are many reasons but in order to understand those, we must look back a few years--so stick with me and I promise that you will soon understand my obsession.
2009 was a memorable year. First of all, Obama was elected into office as the first African-American president and many countries joined in the global recession as we watched markets plummet. However, while these world-changing events were occurring, there was also an event which would soon change my personal world. During this year, I had my first cup of coffee. This was a turning point for my perspective on the world of coffee but just like any obsession, it evolved over time.
Looking back, I have no idea why it took me 15 years to experience my first cup of coffee. I practically grew up in my family's cafe where I was surrounded by good food and even better coffee. As a child, I would sit on the stool at the coffee bar and watch as the baristas churned out espresso drinks with all sorts of modifications. I guess it was a smart decision on my parents part to not provide a strongly caffeinated beverage to a 7 year old because I had more energy than they could handle at the time. I also should be thankful to them for not instilling this coffee addiction into me at a younger age because who know's if I would of made it to where I am today. What I find funny as well is that I didn't even like my first cup of coffee. I'm sure it was a great roast but I was young and didn't appreciate the great things in life.
Flash forward a few years and its 2011. I'm a junior in high school who is already stressing out about college applications. This was one of the first points where coffee came to the rescue. At that point, I just saw it as a tool to keep me up way later than I ever should of been but it got the job done! From 2009-2011, I had just slightly dipped my toes into the world of coffee but it was around this time when I was introduced to what i consider the superior to coffee. I had my first experience with espresso. At this time, I had also learned how to make espresso drinks so there was nothing to stop me from diving right into the magic that is espresso. Through high school, I used coffee and espresso as ways to keep myself awake and as a tool to network with friends. However, as soon as I went to college, the game changed.
In the fall of 2013, I took the big leap to leave home and attend Chapman University. Immediately, I began experimenting more with various espresso drinks and became much more adventurous with the things I would try. It was just recently that I had acknowledged my fascination of coffee. With the start of my sophomore year, I have transformed my appreciation for coffee into a full-blown obsession. With the help of my trusty espresso machine, I have been able to make unlimited amounts of lattes, cappuccinos, and just plain shots of espresso!
At this point, I enjoy these drinks not for the caffeine but for the experience. The different flavors that blend together can be amazing and espresso is an extremely versatile ingredient which can be added to much more than just coffee drinks!
So as all my jumbled thoughts come to a conclusion I think I have begun to explain what fascinates me when it comes to coffee. Since my thoughts are constantly dancing around, I want to use this blog as a place to organize them while sharing my ideas and hopefully as a platform to connect people who hold a similar love for coffee. I guess in a simple way, I'm just doing this for the love of coffee.
